Today was Santa hat day and we also traveled to China where we made lanterns and put a wish inside. Since the lanterns in China have a flame inside to help them float into the air and we couldn't put flames inside of our lanterns, we put our wishes on bright green paper and placed them inside the lantern to "light them up". We had fun floating our lanterns around the classroom in the afternoon. A special thank you to Katie Manner for embroidering the students' name on the Santa hats.
Today we traveled to Mexico. We learned some new words in Spanish and made poinsettias. We also practiced some of our color words in Spanish.
Today we traveled to Australia. We saw that there isn't any snow in Australia like there is here for Christmas. Instead, they have their holiday season on the beach with surfing Santas. If we were going to be ready to spend the holidays in Australia, we were going to need some surf boards so we made our own. We also played Roll and Cover in math where we added numbers together to get the sum that was listed on the beach balls. The students had fun adding three numbers together to color their pages. At the end of the day, we returned back to Dickinson. Tomorrow we travel to Mexico.
Today our class "traveled" to Germany. We made our passports and made sure to put our first and last name, phone number, and address in the front cover. We went through airport security (in our classroom) and watched the plane take off through the cockpit window (on our SmartBoard). While in Germany, we made a countdown to Christmas with paper links and we learned how to play a game called "Find the Pickle" which is similar to "Hot and Cold". At the end of the day, we flew back to Dickinson to make sure we could see our families and rest up for our trip to Australia tomorrow. This week we learned about the letter X. We also learned about how we are each special and unique. We talked about how we can be good friends to each other and treat one another with respect. This week we also started talking about holidays and how we may all have different ways to celebrate. We made some art projects to hang in the hallway above our lockers. The students had fun painting the "snow" on their pictures. This week we talked about giving and sharing. We also spent a lot of time reviewing our classroom rules and manners. We thought of different ways that we can help each other and ourselves to be successful learners in and out of the classroom. We created a chart as a class in school and I will be showing the students the chart below with the clipart on Monday.
